The Space Between

I like the ambiguous territory between the artwork and the viewer. Much of my work exists in that space and challenges the relationship of artist and viewer. The artist might provide a personal vision but the audience interprets it within their own accumulated experiences. I like the dialog between the artwork and the viewer/participant. It questions the notion of where "art" actually exists as well as the idea of art being a commodity that can be owned and possessed. The product becomes a personal experience. It may be provoked with traditional elements — visual art, performance, architecture, or even sociology and recreation — but these elements can be assembled in ways that undermine accepted art formats. This invites many options for experience including physical, intellectual and emotional situations. The choices can become further complicated and unpredictable when several people are involved in defining the experience. The key is to find that perfect balance — thus what appears playful and unthreatening can become an intricate situation designed to involve the viewer as the work of art.
